Week 3

Our week was filled with homecoming festivities.  We enjoyed the dress up days, making a school spirit poster, pep rally, and parade.

Of course, we were busy learning, too.
We went on an insect hunt and got to take a close look at the real insects.

We have been working hard on building stamina to read and work independently.  It is a part of program called Daily 5 that I am implementing in my classroom this year.  I will write more about Daily 5 next week, but if you would like to "peek" in my classroom, go to the elementary website to view a YouTube video.

Upcoming events

Fishing Trip to Fish Hatchery on Tuesday, September 20 1:00-2:00

Meet the Student Teacher

Hello Parents!
My name is Miss Gonnerman. I will be student teaching in Mrs. DeGroot's class until October 14th. I am currently a student at the University of Northern Iowa. I will graduate with a major in Early Childhood Education and a minor in Early Childhood Special Education. During my time in the classroom, I will be teaching the student many different things! One subject area I plan to focus on is Science. I am going to teach the students all about plants and why they are so important. I have enjoyed getting to know your intelligent 1st graders these past three weeks. I look forward to coming to school every day because I know it will be packed with fun and excitement. I can't wait to see what the rest of my time here brings!

What is Word Journey?

Did you find a spelling test in your child's Friday folder?  It is a Word Journey test.
Word Journey is a spelling program.  Your child will work at their level and learn patterns in spelling.  At the beginning of each week, I introduce a set of words that follow specific patterns.  For example, the words for this week ended with -at, -ap or an.  We practice reading and writing the words to get familiar with the patterns in the words. An assessment is given on Friday or the fifth day.

We had another great week of learning.

Charles from Dickinson County Nature Center came to teach us more about Monarch butterfly.  We released five tagged butterflies.  One of our chrysalises turned into a butterfly!  It was a week sooner than we predicted, but we released a healthy male butterfly off to south.

Next week is our homecoming week.  Lots of excitement!!!
Dress up days every day!  My favorite is Pajama Day (Monday)!
A tattoo will be for sale on Friday for 75 cents a piece and a parade in the afternoon (2:30ish?).

Please remember that we have a professional development day on Monday, September 19.

We Went Walking

After reading "I Went Walking" by Sue Williams, our class took a walk around school.
When we came back, we wrote about what we saw on our walk and made a class book.
Enjoy great illustration and narration by each student.

Here are the results.

The butterflies will come out on ...

Thursday, September 15 (2 people)
Friday, September 16 (9 people)

Chrysalis #1 will be...
male (4 people)
female (16 people)

Chrysalis #2 will be ...
