Coins for Caden

Dear SLES Families,

We are very excited to kick off an important elementary fundraiser for one of our very own students. "Coins for Caden" is a school wide fundraiser designed to raise money for Caden Janssen, a student in our ECSE classroom.

For those of you who don't know, Caden was a tragic victim of child abuse and suffered a traumatic brain injury 3 years ago which destroyed the right hemisphere of his brain. (Prior to that, he was a happy, healthy little 3 year old)

Our ECSE staff has worked with Caden over the last 2 1/2 years and during that time he has made some incredible gains!  Part of his rehabilitation has included trips to a hyperbaric oxygen chamber in Kansas City.  The doctors are crediting this unique treatment for many of Caden's gains, most notably the healing that has taken place in Caden's optic nerves (both were completely damaged).   His eyesight, which was completely gone, has begun to return and this is literally nothing short of miraculous.  They feel he would benefit greatly from another round of treatments.  Unfortunately the cost for a series of "dives", as they are called, is $10,000 and NOT covered by insurance or Medicare.

Money raised from "Coins for Caden" will go directly to sending Caden for a round of treatments in the hyperbaric oxygen chamber. Click on the following link to learn a little more about hyperbaric oxygen chamber treatments or HBOT -http://www.hhi-kc.com/Welcome.html

We've included 2 additional links are directly related to Caden. One link is from a KCAU TV news story done on Caden about 2 weeks ago. The other is from our student council students telling a little more about Caden and his needs. These two videos were shared with students at school today.  Hopefully this will help our students understand exactly what they are raising the money for and therefore it will be more meaningful for them.

Collection boxes are located in each elementary classroom. Donations can also be dropped off at the Spirit Lake Elementary school office.

Thanks, in advance, for your support of this very important service project!!!!!!!
